Life's Journey

LIFE'S JOURNEY is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy ****, what a ride!"

Blob People in Trees (was Blob Men in Trees)

What is it?

Post edited in consultation with Pip Wilson who created this concept.

Blob trees are a useful visual device for helping people to articulate their feelings in a non-verbal way. The tree idea is useful for expressing how you feel in a group situation - work team, social group, family. Individual blob people can be used to show how you feel about any aspect of your life.

Wording added in consultation with Pip Wilson

Pip asked me to add the following wording (italicized part).

Blobs - They are neither:
male nor female
young or old
black nor white
I never call them men!!
Often that sexist language is used - but that brings out learning too!!

Blob Theory
“Life is difficult” says M. Scott Peck in his marvellous book, ‘The
Road Less Travelled.
Everyone has a feel-osophy of how life is, and how to negotiate it.
Some have a better grasp of reality than others.
Blobs have a basic idea which enables them to be successful in almost
every context, with every people group, in every age.
They cross so many boundaries because they speak the universal
languages of emotion and body gestures.
From the age of infancy we become fluent in these ways of
communication before we even talk or read.
This knowledge enables us to understand others and ourselves.
Blobs are beautiful humans who are full of imperfections.
They display a whole range of qualities that we might admire or despise.
They interact with all aspects of what it is to be fully human.

The remainder of the post is my original.

Case:

N came to coaching after attending what she termed a 'corporate group hug' overnighter with other members of the senior management team in a large national company.

The facilitator had kicked off the session by asking the delegates to identify which blobperson on the tree was most like them. N had identified one 'grumpy looking sod sitting on the end of a branch on his own'. 'I knew right then and there that my time had come to leave.' This feeling was confirmed at the end of the two-dayer when she still identified with the same figure 'though my arms weren't so tightly crossed'.

Three months later, she had rejigged her finances, quit her job, started retraining for a new career. 'I am so much happier and healthier and feel that I'm moving forward'.

How can I use it?

You can use this tool in anyway you like! N used it to send a very clear message to her conscious mind that she had to change her life significantly. You can use the blob men pictures to illustrate your feelings about any situation. A blob picture may sum things up for you in a way that words can't. You could also use it if you want someone else to 'tell' you how they feel where language might get in the way.

Men in Trees is the my favorite show on television, hands down. The stories are fun, the characters are compelling and different, and though many people like to call them "quirky," they seem to me to be the most realistic mix of real people on television.i also watch men in trees episodes on edogo.com.
